So having the whole thing attached to the saw seemed like the way to go. In using the rig, I have found this works pretty well, though I am considering adding some fold-down legs for a little extra stability. With its large extension table and built-in fence, this sawmill setup makes it relatively easy to cut logs into usable lumber. While I have listed specific sizes and whatnot, don't worry too much about duplicating my setup exactly. I just used the materials I had on hand. Make your rig to suit your saw.

Chapter four joinery YOUR BAND SAW CAN BE AN INVALU-able tool when it comes to cutting joints. At its most basic, you can think of it as a big handsaw, albeit one with an electric motor. Because most joinery involves making straight cuts, as long as you can saw straight, you can make these cuts on the band saw. Adding a fence makes sawing straight even easier, plus it adds the possibility of making repeat cuts. Add in some stop blocks along with a jig or two, and you can turn your saw into a precision joint-making machine.

If the lap occurs in the middle of a piece, you can still use the fence. Simply make a series of shallow cuts, flipping the piece end for end, until its face rides against the fence and the recess is deep enough. cutting mortise-and-tenon joints Actually, this section is mostly about using the band saw to cut tenons; band saws just aren't very good at cutting mortises. The tool for mortising is the plunge router. I've included plans for my mortising jig on the next page. Generally, I'll rout the mortises first, and then cut tenons on the band saw to match.
